Best Time to Hike in Crete: Season, Weekday and Start Time

Most advice about when to hike in Crete stops at the season. Spring and autumn, avoid August, bring water. All true, and none of it helps on the afternoon you actually sit down to book, because the thing that decides whether you walk is not the month. It is whether the walk you want runs on the day you are free.
We sell eight guided walks across the island, from €65 to €120, and when we read their live booking calendars rather than their titles, six of the eight turn out to sell exactly one day of the week. Not one departure a day — one day. This guide is built from those calendars: which months each walk still has dates in, which weekday it runs, what time it starts, and where the heat and the altitude change the answer.
Quick Summary
The best time to hike in Crete is spring and autumn, but the useful answer is narrower. Our walking calendars run from €65 to €120 and close in stages: forest yoga takes its last Saturday in late September, the Richtis gorge walk its last Wednesday at the end of September, the via ferrata and the three mountain routes finish in the last week of October, and only the labyrinth walk near Knossos still sells dates into the end of November. Almost everything starts at 09:00, one starts at 08:00, and exactly one runs in the evening.
The Walking Year, Month by Month
Crete's walking year is not one season but three overlapping ones, and altitude is what separates them. The high routes on Psiloritis are under snow from around December to early April, which takes the mountain off the table for a third of the year. The low walks — a gorge floor, a countryside path through olive groves — are comfortable far earlier and far later than that.
Spring is the strongest window on paper: the ground is green, the light is long enough, and nothing is closed for heat. Autumn is the one people underuse. By late September the coast has emptied, the temperature has come off its peak and every one of the walks we list is still selling dates. October is the last full month for the mountain.
Summer is not impossible, it is just narrower. In July and August the honest choice is a 09:00 start on high ground, or an evening. What does not work is a midday walk at low altitude, and no product we sell offers one.
When Each Calendar Closes
This is the part that catches people planning an October or November trip, because the walks do not all finish together.
The forest yoga and hiking session in Lasithi takes its last Saturday in late September. The Richtis gorge walk sells its final Wednesday at the end of September. The via ferrata runs to the third week of October. The three-peak ridge finishes a couple of days later, and the Psiloritis summit, the five-peak circuit and the Venetian aqueduct walk all sell dates into the last week of October.
After that, one thing is left. The labyrinth meditation walk near Knossos at €70 still has dates through to the end of November — the only guided walk on this page you can book for a late-autumn trip. If you are coming in November and want to be on foot, that is the booking.
The Weekday Nobody Publishes
Six of the eight walks on our list sell exactly one day of the week. It is the single most useful thing to know before you build an itinerary, and it appears in no product title.
The Richtis gorge walk runs on Wednesdays. Forest yoga runs on Saturdays. The Venetian aqueduct walk and the five-peak circuit both run on Mondays. The three-peak ridge runs on Sundays. The via ferrata runs on Fridays.
Only two have any flexibility. The labyrinth walk sells Mondays and Thursdays with the occasional Friday, and the Psiloritis summit day trip sells Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays — which makes it the easiest mountain day to fit around a week that is already half-booked.
The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: if you are in Crete for five nights and you want the ridge traverse, there is one Sunday in your trip and that is your only chance at it. Build the week around the walk, not the walk around the week.
Why Almost Everything Starts at 09:00
Six of the eight walks start at 09:00. The via ferrata starts at 08:00. That is not a coincidence and it is not the operators being unimaginative — it is the heat, dealt with by the only method available.
A 09:00 start on the aqueduct route means finishing at 14:00. A 09:00 start on the Psiloritis summit means the same. The three-hour walks are done by midday. The one route that keeps going through the afternoon is the five-peak circuit, which runs 09:00 to 18:30 and is the reason its listing asks for three litres of water rather than two.
None of the walks we sell offers a midday departure, and if you find yourself wanting one, the answer is that it does not exist rather than that it is sold out.
The One Walk That Only Runs in the Evening
Forest yoga and hiking in the Kroustas pine forest in Lasithi is the exception to everything above. It is €100, it lasts three hours, and the only slot it sells is 17:00 to 20:00 on a Saturday. The listing recommends booking an evening session about three hours before sunset, which is exactly what that slot is.
Two things to settle before you book it. The session site is above 800 metres, where the listing puts the temperature around ten degrees below the coast — so the warm clothes it asks for are not a formality on an August evening. And the hotel transfer is €150, paid on site and not included in the online price, which is more than the walk itself. There is a minimum of two guests, so the realistic figure for a couple who need collecting is well above the headline.
That is not an argument against it. An evening on high ground is a good use of a hot day, and our short trips from Agios Nikolaos guide covers the other eastern bookings that behave the same way. It is an argument for reading the transfer line first.
Walks you can book
Heat, Altitude and What the Thermometer Does
Altitude buys you more than shade does. The Psiloritis routes start from a plateau at 1,581 metres and climb to 2,456, and the summit runs far colder than sea level even in the height of summer — which is why a windproof jacket is on the essential list for those routes in every month they run, August included.
At the other end, the low walks have no altitude to help them. The gorge floor at Richtis is cool because it is shaded and has water in it; the countryside route near Knossos is neither, which is why it stops at 14:00.
Heat also closes things. The Samaria Gorge in the west, which we do not sell, has been shut mid-season by the state agency that runs it for both heat and wind, including one day in July 2026. Nothing on this page is subject to that kind of order, but all three mountain routes run weather permitting and the guide will tell you in advance if a day is being adjusted.
What to Bring, and How It Scales
The kit list rises with the length of the day rather than with the price. Two litres of water minimum on the Psiloritis summit route, two and a half on the ridge, three on the five-peak circuit — and there is no refill point on any of them.
Below the mountain it is gentler. The gorge walk asks for trekking or sport shoes and adds a swimming costume and towel, because there is a pool at the bottom of the waterfall. The aqueduct route asks for comfortable walking shoes, a hat and a water bottle, and nothing more. The via ferrata is the odd one out: it supplies all the technical equipment, but asks for a small, close-fitting pack, because a bulky one gets in the way on the vertical sections.
Booking Around the Calendar
Work in this order and the trip assembles itself.
Start with the fixed weekday, because it is the only thing you cannot move. Find the walk you want, find its day, and see whether that day exists in your trip. Then check the month, because a late-October arrival rules out the gorge and the forest, and a November one leaves you the labyrinth walk and nothing else.
Only then look at the start time and the transfer. Two of the walks we list include hotel pick-up in the price — the aqueduct route and all three Psiloritis days. Two do not: the gorge walk meets you at Lachanas Bridge and quotes the transfer separately, and forest yoga charges €150 for it on site. That gap can be larger than the difference in the walk prices, and it is the last thing most people check.
If the day you have free has no walk on it, our half-day tours from Heraklion guide sorts everything else in the area by departure time, and the hidden gems guide covers the places you can reach on foot without a booking at all.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Planning the walk around the week. Six of eight run on one weekday. The walk has less flexibility than your itinerary does.
Assuming a summer walk means an early start is optional. It is the whole mechanism. There is no midday departure to fall back on.
Reading the price as the cost. A €100 evening in Lasithi with a €150 transfer is a €250 evening for one person, or €350 for two once the minimum of two guests is counted.
Booking a late-autumn trip and expecting the full choice. By November the calendar is down to one walk.
Treating a three-hour listing as a three-hour morning. Richtis is out towards Sitia and the aqueduct route runs from Heraklion; the booked hours are the walking, and the driving sits outside them.
What We Do Not Sell
Two honest gaps, both in the west.
We do not sell the Samaria Gorge, and this page is not trying to compete for it. It is in Chania, several hours from anything else here, and it is a full committed day rather than a morning. If it is the reason you are coming to Crete, book it locally in the west rather than from this side of the island.
We also do not sell anything in the White Mountains. Everything on this page is central or eastern Crete — Heraklion and Lasithi. If your trip is built around western trails, the walks here are the wrong list, and it is better to know that now than after you have booked a villa in Elounda.
Where to Stay
Base yourself by which half of the calendar you are chasing. Every Psiloritis route, the via ferrata and the aqueduct walk collect from or start near Heraklion. The gorge walk and the forest evening are out in Lasithi, an hour or more east.
We run our own villa company, My Creta Villa, and our houses sit in exactly those two areas — Heraklion and Lasithi — which is convenient for this particular page and worth saying plainly rather than implying. It also means we have nothing at all in the west, so if your walking plans are Chania-based we are not the right people to book a house from either.
Villas near the walking, in Heraklion and Lasithi
My Creta Villa is our own villa company — same family as this guide.
Hiking in Crete: frequently asked questions
When is the best time to hike in Crete?
Spring and autumn. In practice our calendars run through October for the mountain routes and the aqueduct walk, close at the end of September for the gorge and forest walks, and leave only the labyrinth walk near Knossos selling dates into late November.
Can you hike in Crete in August?
Yes, but on the terms the calendar sets. Every walk except one starts at 09:00 or 08:00 and finishes by early afternoon, and the single evening option runs 17:00 to 20:00 above 800 metres. There is no midday departure on any of the walks we sell.
Is there snow on the Cretan mountains?
Psiloritis holds snow from around December to early April, which is why the three routes up it sell no winter dates. The low gorge and countryside walks are not affected in the same way.
Which day of the week do the walks run?
Richtis on Wednesdays, forest yoga on Saturdays, the aqueduct walk and the five-peak circuit on Mondays, the three-peak ridge on Sundays and the via ferrata on Fridays. Only the labyrinth walk and the Psiloritis summit sell more than one weekday.
Is hotel pick-up included?
On the three Psiloritis routes and the aqueduct walk, yes. The Richtis gorge walk meets at Lachanas Bridge and quotes transfer separately, and forest yoga charges €150 for it, paid on site and not included in the online price.
Do you sell tours to the Samaria Gorge?
No. Samaria is in western Crete and every guided walk on our list is in Heraklion and Lasithi. It is worth booking from a western base rather than trying to reach it from this side of the island.
Final Thoughts
The season answer for hiking in Crete is the one everybody gives: come in spring or autumn. The booking answer is narrower and more useful. Eight walks, €65 to €120, six of them on a single fixed weekday, almost all starting at 09:00, and a calendar that closes in stages between late September and the end of November.
Find the weekday first. Check the month second. Read the transfer line third. Everything after that is just choosing how many hours you want to be walking.
